EFFECTS OF FISHING INDUSTRY ON THE OCEAN AND MARINE WILDLIFE

Fish can easily be found and easy to consume. Some developing countries rely on fish as part of their daily food. By overfishing, it is endangering the live of marine animals and habitat. As mention above, today the world faces global fishing crisis. According to United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) 70% of world’s important marine fish stocks are fully fished.
There are several impacts or effects that fishing industries give. Those industries fish in many ways, just to get the most amount of fish in the least amount of time taken so it will be beneficial and effective. Some fishing techniques cause habitat destruction, for example dynamite fishing. Dynamite fishing is a practice of using explosions to kill schools of fish for much easier collection. This technique is illegal and can cause extreme destruction to the surrounding ecosystem such as coral reefs. Destructive fishing is one of the biggest threats to the coral reef ecosystems. Blown up reefs or destroyed reefs has no more use. Coral reefs are less likely to recover from such disturbance such as destruction from blast fishing or dynamite fishing.
There is another impact from the fishing industries, overfishing. Overfishing occurs when fisherman hauls tons of fish at once that make dramatic changes to marine life cycle. Extinction of many species of marine wildlife could be happen because of overfishing. Another impact is by-catch, which is fish that caught unintentionally in a fishery while intending to catch other fish. The example of by-catching is dolphin that caught in tuna nets. when a fishery catching a tuna using big nets, in the surrounding area dolphins can be found. Usually the want to catch the fish for their meals, but instead they got caught up and stuck in the nets. Mammals do not have gills, when they stuck in nets underwater they will not be able to breath and drawn. From this event, fish producers mark their packaging with “dolphin friendly” tags to reassure buyers, but that doesn’t mean that dolphin were not killed in the production of tin tuna. Stop overfishing!!
