Knowing the condition of the seafloor is one of the common knowledge. We know that seafloor is not flat, they also have ridges, trench even mountains. But where is the information come from? We should thank to German Meteor Expedition back at 1925.
Meteor voyage (German Meteor Expedition) was an oceanographic expedition that happened in 1925-1927. Planned by Alfred Merz, and commanded by Captain F. Spiess. There were 123 crew including 10 officers, 29 petty officers, 78 ratings and 6 civilians. They explored South Atlantic Ocean. They also known as the first oceanography expedition. Their main purpose is to mapping the earths’ sea floor. The meteor voyage has several important discoveries that very important to human being especially to oceanography these days, wich is mapping ocean floor.
· The first one is that the earth sea floor is not flat. They found many ridges, mountains, trench and many unique textures on the sea floor.
· The ridge in the mid-Atlantic that continuous to south Atlantic passes Indian Ocean until the Cape of Good Hope.
They release Weather Balloons while conducting this experiment. The functions are to measure the humidity, wind speed, air pressure and also temperature. This device also helps the crew to gather datas and to predict the weather for their own safety.
The most memorable and important innovation was the use of an echo sounder. Echo sounder is a device that uses sonar technology for measuring underwater physical and biological components. It also has the function to determine the depth of the seabed and also detecting objects in the water by measuring the time taken for sound echoes to return to the source. This innovation helped the crew to determine and map the seafloor, which was the main purpose of the expedition.
After this expedition is finished, they discovered that the sea floor had many different depths and there were bumps, ridges, and trenches inside the ocean. They also successfully change the idea that ocean floor is flat as what we know today.
